about this artwork

Normandy 1944. A Sherman tank of H Co., 66 Arm. Reg., 2 Arm. Div. navigates its way via the road leading through the French countryside. The commander and crew keep an eye out for enemy activity.

The process of making my artwork pieces consists of different steps. I start out with gathering images and assets. Next is visualising the composition in my head, sometimes I sketch the idea on a piece of paper. After this I place the main subject – the Sherman tank – on the Photoshop artboard. With a tool I ‘cut out’ the tank from the white background. To give the impression of movement, I blurred the wheels with a blur filter.

The next phase consists of matching the scene with the main subject, a process where you need to look at the general lighting, highlights and shadows in correlation with the light source. I do all of this with so called ‘adjustment layers’. By adding some bushes, a tree, a fence and a dirt road I added the remaining elements that make the scene more interesting.

The detail stage is where I use different kinds of brushes to add effects like the dust clouds and track prints. I’ve bought a ‘Photoshop Painting Action’ which I utilise to create some artistic brush lines on the artwork piece. It gives that oil painting finish. Hope you like it!
